Working with groups

Group work can benefit more people

Group work with children or young people can include…

Teaching and developing new skills to practice, for example:

  • Developing resiliency and independent learning skills

  • Managing feelings of anger/anxiety/low mood

  • Improving functional skills (for example with reference to Preparing for Adulthood)

Group work with adults can include…

Consultation with staff to better understand the needs of a specific student or group of students.

Workshops or more formal training for a group of parents or staff on, for example:

  • Adverse Childhood Experiences/trauma and/or attachment

  • Better understanding conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Providing informal Q & A sessions for staff.

In relation to my group work…

I can’t thank Sarah enough for her thought-provoking training/workshop session for all teachers, learning support/ SEN and SLT staff, involved with a student in Year 9- it was excellent!

Sarah’s understanding of the student’s strengths, difficulties and their perspective was illuminating and helped me think differently about their behaviour in school. We had a rare opportunity to air our thoughts, feelings and concerns together confidentially and discuss practical ideas and approaches to help turn things around for everyone concerned.
Sarah’s session will definitely have an impact on the way I view, teach and help this pupil and others in school!
